The Power of Education | Editor's Note

Volume 2 Issue 2 Fall-Winter 2015-16

Education changes lives. We all know that. In fact, it seems cliché to say it, but boy is it true! This edition, we focused on the power of education. Human beings are creatures of habit. Change is challenging. That is why we could not resist our feature story, Brave Change, which documents a woman’s courage to not only change her life, but also change the course of the generations that would follow her. It is a story of tenaciousness and triumph that underscores how important education is in breaking the cycle of poverty and violence. (Page 8)

On this edition’s cover, we featured an award winning photograph from Jose Galvez. For us, the emotion in the subject’s face captures how much passion flags evoke. “You see the American flag flown proudly and defiantly at almost all natural and man-made disasters. It is the source of comfort for so many. In spite of our differences, we are all Americans and nothing will break our spirit. The U.S. flag is so much more than just a product; it is our past, our present and our future,” said FlagandBanner.com owner Kerry McCoy.

Also in this issue, we report on the summer of controversial flags and how it affected our business. (Page 14)

Staff writer Sarah DeClerk began a new series that we are calling Fun with Flags. (Page 21) Look for it in every edition to learn about the symbolism of the featured flag. In remembrance of the anniversary of September 11 and all the valiant firemen that ran upstairs while all others were running down, and to highlight October, which is Fire Education month (and because we just think firemen are extraordinarily heroic) we give you a little history on the firehouse dog. (Page 5)

As always, there is business advice from our publisher and a couple of articles for your entertainment and enjoyment.

In preparing this issue, I ran across a quote by Marian Deegan that I wanted to share with you: “Our lives are marked by the people who choose to matter more. It’s about making a difference in people’s lives. Remembered or not, lived out in a small town or on the world stage, the journey of relevance matters.

You matter. You are Brave. brave flag
