Volume 8 Issue 1 Spring-Summer 2023
By Arwen Dover

For this issue of Brave, we thought we would share the coffee drink that took the internet by storm during the pandemic – the Whipped Coffee Drink.

When I was a kid, I asked my dad if I could take a sip of his coffee. At the time, I couldn’t understand the appeal of his bitter “dirty water.” As a grown up, it took several years before I would attempt to try coffee, again. Now, like my father, I ingest my daily fuel - er, coffee - with relish. The traditional recipe that I found was so vague that my first few attempts were failures, so I went to the YouTube experts. A big thanks to the Honeysuckle and James Hoffman channels for helping me. After some trial and error, here is my advice:

  • Hand mixing will take you an eon. I highly suggest you use a hand mixer or an immersion blender. (And maybe wear an apron)
  • This recipe uses a 1 – 1 – 1 ratio using the same tool. For you bakers out there, resist using a liquid measure for your water and a measuring spoon for your dry components.
  • The instant coffee granules need to dissolve as much as possible before mixing. We used Juan Valdez brand and the granules were so large that, on our last attempt, we crushed them into smaller bits.
  • Over whipping will give you a peanut butter texture that does not mix well with liquid.
  • You can add extra ingredients once it’s whipped!

For my last attempt, I successfully whipped up a large batch and served Coffee Shooters to my coworkers.
